Managed Retreat
What really is "Managed Retreat" and why should you care?
1
Managed Retreat Defined
Managed retreat involves moving people and buildings away from risks like floods, wildfires, or droughts, due to climate change threats like sea level rise.
While this concept may seem promising in theory, for residents of Imperial Beach, it could entail moving away from our beachfront residences. This understandably brings up various questions: Where would we move to? What are the financial implications? Who is assisting residents in this transition, and are they truly looking out for our best interests?

Why retreat, when we don't have to?
Mother Nature protects out Beaches if we would just let her.
For years the Tijuana River, prior to being redirected, has provided sand replenishment naturally to our beaches through sediment transport. The river's natural flow carried sediment downstream, depositing it along the coastline and helping to maintain the sandy shores that many have come to cherish. However, with the river now redirected, this natural process has been disrupted, leading to concerns about beach erosion and the long-term health of our coastal ecosystems

Special Interest Issues
Since the beginning discussions of Sea Level Rise and plans that could combat it, it has been clear that transparency and community involvement are being compromised for Imperial Beach Residents.
From concerns of entities receiving monies with expectations and strings attached, to residents not having a voice in the City's official Sea Level Rise Assessment/ Plan, the journey has been fraught with challenges. Many residents feel sidelined, their voices drowned out by larger, more influential stakeholders. Efforts to address these concerns must prioritize open dialogue and genuine collaboration.
It is OUR COMMUNITY, OUR CHOICE!
